Description:

South Asia, India, Pala Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A beautiful cast bronze statue of a deity, possibly Vishnu, multiple arms holding implements such as a bow, mace, and arrow, flanked by 2 smaller celestial consorts - perhaps other deities or Ayudhapurushas, and framed by a mandorla arch. The statue is mounted on a removable custom wooden base that compliments the ancient bronze. Size: 3.5" L x 2" W x 8.5" H (8.9 cm x 5.1 cm x 21.6 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

  • Condition: Losses to the base of the bronze pedestal the deity stands on, and losses to both upper sides of flaming mandorla. Missing lower hands and implements. Softening to finer details and light mineral deposits in recessed areas. Dark patina and green toning. Wooden base is vintage and custom carved to support the missing bronze pedestal area. Statue is removable from wood base, and wood has a patina to match the statue's surface.
