Description:

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 11th to 13th century CE. A monumental and profound stone sculpture depicts Buddhamuchalinda, an iconic representation of the Buddha sheltered by the multi-headed Naga (serpent king) Muchalinda. The Buddha is portrayed seated in a half-lotus (ardhaparyankasana) position, his hands gracefully resting in the dhyanamudra (meditation gesture), reflecting a state of deep contemplation and inner peace. The Naga's coiled body forms the base upon which the Buddha meditates, while its seven-headed hood majestically rises behind and above him, intricately carved with scales and serene faces, signifying divine protection. Size: 8" L x 15" W x 31" H (20.3 cm x 38.1 cm x 78.7 cm); 33" H (83.8 cm) on included custom stand.

This powerful iconography references the legend where Muchalinda shielded the newly enlightened Buddha from a torrential storm. Crafted with exceptional skill from a dark, dense stone, likely sandstone, this piece embodies the artistic sophistication of the Khmer Empire, a period marked by the flourishing of Buddhist and Hindu art, often associated with the grandeur of sites like Angkor. Such sculptures served as central devotional objects, symbolizing spiritual resilience and the ultimate triumph of enlightenment under divine guardianship.
