Description:

Central Asia, Persia, Khorassan, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A finely cast brass ewer from medieval Khorassan, featuring a cylindrical body with twelve vertical facets rising to a narrow foot. The shoulders are crowned with a bold twelve-pointed rosette in relief, while the tall cylindrical neck is adorned with repoussé lions flanking the spout, their stylized forms serving both as guardians and symbols of strength. The ewer is completed by a simple loop handle, elegantly arched for balance and utility. The faceted body is incised with intricate panels of geometric and vegetal designs, testifying to the refined metalworking traditions of Khorassan artisans. Vessels such as this were both functional and ceremonial, likely used to pour water or wine during courtly banquets or elite gatherings. The lion motifs in particular reflect Persian symbolism of sovereignty, courage, and divine protection. Size: 6.8" L x 6.3" W x 13.6" H (17.3 cm x 16 cm x 34.5 cm)

This ewer encapsulates the sophistication of Islamic metalwork from northeastern Iran during the Seljuk and post-Seljuk periods, when Khorassan was celebrated as a major center of artistic production.
