Description:

Central Asia, Persia, Seljuq Empire, Khurasan, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A finely crafted Seljuq brass jug, its elegant pear-shaped body rising from a flared foot to a narrow rim surmounted by a curved strap handle. The vessel bears refined decoration, with a continuous band of inlaid Arabic script encircling the rim and a row of rosette-like flower motifs meticulously punched around the midsection. The script, likely benedictory in nature, would have imbued the vessel with both aesthetic beauty and protective meaning, while the floral decoration recalls the garden imagery so central to Islamic art and its vision of paradise. Produced in Khurasan, a flourishing center of Seljuq metalwork, this jug embodies the technical sophistication of medieval Persian artisans who perfected the art of inlay on brass. Its balanced form, shimmering surface, and harmony of geometry and calligraphy reveal the fusion of function and ornament characteristic of the Seljuq aesthetic. Size: 6.7" L x 6" W x 7.7" H (17 cm x 15.2 cm x 19.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-T.F. Holy Lands collection, formed since the 1960s
