Lot 208
Islamic World, Ayyubid Dynasty, Levant region, Syria, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A finely potted stoneware jar attributed to the Raqqa workshops of northern Syria, its rounded body rising from a slightly recessed base to a short neck with a gently everted rim. The vessel is coated in a pale, softly toned glaze that pools and thins across the surface, allowing the form to remain visually dominant while still carrying traces of decoration. Encircling the shoulder are surviving bands of painted ornament, including remains of flowing arabesque motifs rendered in darker tones beneath the glaze. Though partially preserved, these sinuous vegetal forms retain their rhythmic movement, offering a glimpse of the jar's original decorative program. Across the surface, areas of shimmering iridescence catch the light, the result of centuries of burial and chemical interaction between glaze and environment, lending the vessel a subtle, luminous quality. Size: 4" Diameter x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm)
Raqqa was one of the most important ceramic production centers of the Islamic world during the Ayyubid period, celebrated for its stoneware bodies and refined glazed surfaces. Vessels such as this were produced for both utilitarian and decorative purposes, often balancing restrained shapes with elegant surface treatment. The combination of controlled form, painted ornament, and luminous glaze reflects the high level of technical and artistic sophistication achieved by Raqqa potters in the 12th and 13th centuries. This jar stands as a compelling example of Ayyubid ceramic production, where function, ornament, and material innovation come together in a quietly expressive object that continues to reward close viewing.
