Lot 57A
Near East, Persia, Kashan, Seljuk to Ilkhanid Period, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A luminous survivor of medieval Persia's golden age of ceramic innovation, this conical bowl radiates the refined elegance of Kashan's famed kilns. Its sharply splayed profile rises from a short circular foot, forming an ideal canvas for the painter's brush and the alchemist's flame. The exterior is subtly adorned with fine slip-painted bands, meandering tendrils, and rhythmic brushstrokes in warm ochre tones, while the true marvel lies within. Inside the bowl, pale golden hues are punctuated by brilliant swathes of cobalt blue, laid down in four radiant brush-formed panels that cross like the arms of a star. These blue bands shimmer with opalescent flashes - evidence of prized iridescence - where the glaze has matured over centuries, forming a prismatic patina beloved by collectors and connoisseurs alike. Size: 7" Diameter x 3.3" H (17.8 cm x 8.4 cm)
Though its once-vivid pigments have softened with time, delicate vegetal scrollwork still dances beneath the glaze, a whisper of a floral motif or arabesque design etched into the surface like the ghost of a garden at dusk. The bowl's earthen tones and lustrous interior reflect the height of Kashan's aesthetic in the Seljuk and early Mongol periods, when ceramicists fused science, geometry, and poetry into everyday vessels of transcendent beauty. Bowls of this type were often used for serving or display, but they were more than functional wares - they were emblems of taste and learning, traded along Silk Road routes and admired in princely courts from Damascus to Delhi.
