Description:

Western Europe, Medieval period, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A medieval silver signet ring bearing the engraved initials "VRI" in a stylized Gothic script, likely denoting the original owner's name or title. The bezel is slightly domed and circular, flanked by twin volute-like shoulders that sweep into a rounded hoop incised with small, diagonal notches. The angular letterforms are etched with clarity, their arrangement suggesting either an abbreviation or a tri-letter monogram typical of high medieval naming customs. Signet rings of this period functioned not only as personal adornment but also as essential instruments of authentication, pressed into wax to seal and endorse documents. In an era when few could write their names, a ring like this served as a portable identity - part signature, part social badge. The engraving may have marked its wearer as a landholder, merchant, or official whose business required stamped consent. Size: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 8; silver quality: 96.42%; weight: 5.3 grams

The silver shows a soft gray patina from age, and the interior displays smoothing from long use. Worn over generations, such rings often passed as heirlooms, accumulating both wear and history. With its finely preserved script and timeless form, this example speaks to the enduring importance of names, letters, and the human impulse to leave a mark.
