Description:

Western Europe, Germany, Medieval period, ca. 14th century CE. A Great Helm from the Middle Ages, composed of steel sheets hammered on both the interior and exterior surfaces. The helm is riveted together from multiple panels and features a somewhat elongated, bucket-shaped design with a flat top, a nose guard panel, ventilation holes, and narrow eye slits. As an essential piece of knightly armor, the Great Helm encased the entire head and face, providing maximum protection against flesh wounds and blunt force trauma. It was typically worn over a padded coif or hood for additional comfort and shock absorption. By the 14th century, the Great Helm began to fall out of favor, replaced by more practical designs such as the barbute and visored helmets, which offered improved ventilation and visibility while maintaining strong protection. The Great Helm remains an iconic symbol of medieval warfare, famously associated with Crusaders and popularized in modern culture by the Black Knight character in the classic film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Size: 13" L x 9" W x 12.5" H (33 cm x 22.9 cm x 31.8 cm)
