Description:

Achille Prisse d'Avennes (French, 1807-1879). 15 plates + title page from "Histoire de l'Art Egyptian d'apres les Monuments" ca. 1858-1878. Fifteen original lithographs (4 color) plus the title page from Achille Prisse d'Avennes' impressive "Histoire de l'Art Egyptian d'apres les Monuments" published in Paris from 1858 to 1878. Achille Prisse d'Avennes worked for the Egyptian ruler Muhammed Ali as a civil engineer from 1826 until 1836 and created a large series of illustrated records of Egyptian monuments. These culminated in his monumental two volume publication which documented important Egyptian artifacts, sculpture, and architecture - in numerous cases presenting the only surviving records of lost artifacts. Size (plates): 21.5" L x 15.5" W (54.6 cm x 39.4 cm) Size (frontispiece): 22.625" L x 18" W (57.5 cm x 45.7 cm)

According to Maarten J. Raven, Curator of the Egyptian Department, the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden, "None of Prisse’s contemporaries had the skill or endurance to bring such an endeavor to such a brilliant end. He was far ahead of his time in his awareness of the vulnerability of the monuments and the need to protect them and to record them. His were the first reliable drawings of Egyptian architecture and ornaments and the first plans and sections of constructions newly excavated. He returned to Paris [in 1860] with a rich harvest of 300 drawings, 400 meters of squeezes, and 150 photographs."
