Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A stoneware roof finial in the form of a mythical makara, a dragon like being. The rearing front half is hollow molded and incised with details, then painted with a brown glaze over a white slip. The serpentine beast has a scrolling mane down the spine, painted and incised scales, nose horn, and a decorative collar. The dramatic visage and details are all emphasized to be more visible to viewers on the ground. This makara rests on a flat base with an opening where the torso ends, for securing to a roof beam. Special assembly halls were generally constructed of wood with glazed terracotta or stoneware architectural elements, such as this. Size: 8.5" L x 5" W x 16.25" H (21.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 41.3 cm)
