Description:

Eastern Europe, 15th century CE. An interesting copper tray with silver repousse appliques that are riveted with iron pins onto the tray. The tray is simple, a flat form with rolled up edges that flare slightly outwards. The silver appliques are more ornate, each showing a religious scene of saints and/or angels. One is Daniel with the lion; the others are more difficult to interpret but a keen scholar of Christianity may figure them out! This item was probably used as a collection tray or some other kind of ritual item in a church. With extensive signs of use, we can surmise that it was a prized item, probably used for a long period of time and treasured by the church community. Size: 5" W x 8.3" H (12.7 cm x 21.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-New Jersey Collection

  • Condition: Significant wear to the copper of the tray, as shown; corrosion to iron rivets; silver repousse is misshapen in some places but they are in good shape with very clear designs.
