Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Majapahit Java, ca. 15th century CE. A beautiful brass finial featuring a meandering, openwork design and a pair of naga heads that extend from the central, square-shaped socketing shaft. Nagas or serpents are powerful symbols in South and Southeast Asia and are believed to guard the watery underworld where they reside in jeweled palaces and protect corals and pearls. In Southeast Asia, they also represent the bridge that connects the human and divine worlds. Nagas are therefore among the most prevalent signs in Indonesian art, ranging from relief carvings and architectural elements to ritual objects. Nagas are said to carry jewels on their heads, seen here as a conical bump. Size: 6.9" W x 3.8" H (17.5 cm x 9.7 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the late 1990's; ex-USA art dealer
