Description:

Vietnam, mid to late 15th century CE. This is a blue and white miniature vase with a pear shape and a trumpet neck. It has decoration of vertical petals on the body, bands around the lip and shoulder, and lotus petals on the base. Only the base is unglazed. This is from the Hoi An shipwreck, which was found off the coast of central Vietnam in the South China Sea in the 1990s and excavated in 1999. When the ship went down, it was carrying a massive cargo of Vietnamese ceramics -- over 250,000 unique pieces! These were all kilned in the Red River Delta. I particularly enjoy these shipwrecked items because of their delightful encrustations and how well the artwork is preserved. Size: 2.3" W x 3.6" H (5.8 cm x 9.1 cm).
