Description:

China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE - 220 CE. A remarkable and cohesive Han Dynasty terracotta banqueting set, comprising fifteen vessels, including one large basin, eleven small shallow bowls (known as "ear-cups" due to the small ear-like handles to each side), and three handled ladles, each crafted in a fine dark gray clay with vibrant red-cinnabar interiors. These vessels reflect the enduring traditions of Han funerary ceramic production, where pottery wares were interred in tombs to serve the deceased in the afterlife. The uniformity in form and slip decoration suggests they were created as a deliberate service set, intended to evoke elite domestic life or ritual dining customs within the tomb environment. Size of platter: 12.75" W x 2.5" H (32.4 cm x 6.4 cm)

The ladles, with arched handles and deep bowls, would have been used for pouring wine or broth, while the small bowls likely represented individual servings of food. The large platter or basin served as a central communal dish. his set exemplifies the Han ceramicists' ability to combine elegance, function, and symbolic permanence in wares made exclusively for mortuary contexts.
