Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 16th century CE. A beautiful gilt brass torana or mandorla for a standing deity embellished with intricate, openwork imagery of scrolling vines and lotus flowers surrounding 13 gods and goddesses, one of which is elephant-headed Ganesha. At the top center of the torana is a yoni with a lingam - the aniconic symbols of the female and male sexual organs and also for the Hindu gods Shakti and Shiva. The scrolling openwork floral designs are influenced by the metal work of the Pala style from Eastern India that spread into the Himalaya region. This mandorla would have been positioned behind a deity figure forming an ornate halo or aura - the indented arch at the center likely framed the figure's head. Size: 10.9" W x 12.6" H (27.7 cm x 32 cm); 13.8" H (35.1 cm) on included custom stand.
