Western Europe, probably England or France, Renaissance period, ca. 16th century CE. A hand-carved lapis lazuli cameo of a grotesque male head with exaggerated features carved with remarkable and detailed precision. Intended to ward off evil, the grotesque displays a hairy coiffure above a compressed nose, a bushy mustache, and a downward-pointing goatee. The cameo is displayed in a 57.2% gold ring setting bearing a solid shank adorned with applied granules near the terminals. Size (cameo): 0.32" L x 0.34" W (0.8 cm x 0.9 cm); (ring setting): 0.35" L x 0.84" W x 0.92" H (0.9 cm x 2.1 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 57.2% (equivalent to 12K+); weight: 2.3 grams; US ring size: 5.5
