Description:

"The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero" by Conyers Middleton. London: W. Innys and R. Manby, 1741. Volumes I and II from the Second Edition. First published in 1741, Conyers Middleton's "The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero" is a landmark work of 18th-century scholarship and biography. Written by the distinguished English clergyman and classical scholar Conyers Middleton (1683–1750), the book was among the earliest comprehensive accounts of Cicero's life based closely on primary Roman sources, particularly Cicero's own letters. Middleton sought to present Cicero not only as an orator and statesman but also as a moral and intellectual model for the Enlightenment. His portrayal of Cicero's philosophical moderation and civic virtue reflected contemporary ideals of reason and moral balance. Size of larger (Volume I): 1.5" L x 6" W x 9" H (3.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 22.9 cm)

The work was widely read in Britain and Europe, admired for its elegant prose and humanist approach, and it influenced later biographical writing in both classical and historical studies. Issued in London by W. Innys and R. Manby, the 1741 second edition demonstrates the work's early popularity and lasting influence within both scholarly and literary circles of Georgian England.
