Description:

East Asia, China, late Ming Dynasty, ca. 17th century CE. A fabulous gilt wood sculpture of a Taoist deity, possibly the God of Culture and Literature Wenchang Wang, in a stepped cap and long robes, seated with legs spread in a dragon throne. Liberal remains of gilding adorn his robes, skin, and headdress, while black and white embellish his shoes, and vibrant, mercury red pigment decorates the throne and ribbons that fall from his headdress. The bottom of his throne is supported by 4 legs and features floral relief decoration, all atop a pedestal also with 4 legs and additional floral ornamentation. Size: 5.8" L x 7" W x 13.3" H (14.7 cm x 17.8 cm x 33.8 cm)

Wenchang Wang is a Chinese deity associated with literature, scholarship, and the success of students, particularly in imperial examinations. He is revered as the god of culture and learning in Taoism and Chinese folk religion. Wenchang Wang is believed to assist scholars in their academic pursuits and is often worshipped by students seeking success in their studies. His mythology dates back to the Tang and Song dynasties, though he gained prominence during the Ming and Qing dynasties when civil service exams were crucial for social mobility. He is often depicted holding a brush and scroll, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge. Temples dedicated to him can be found throughout China, especially in regions with a strong emphasis on education, such as Sichuan, where he is said to have been a historical figure before deification. Worshippers often pray to Wenchang Wang for intelligence, eloquence, and success in examinations, making him a significant figure in Chinese cultural traditions.
