East Asia, China, late Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th century. An impressive carved-stone relief of ovoid form depicting the aerial view of two catfish facing one another. Boasting a translucent surface of creamy white, the intricately carved relief shows two round fish heads with annular eyes and sinuous whiskers holding a ribbon-like object between them. Swirling clouds, a kite, and a vegetal motif decorate the area surrounding the two fish. Size: 3.125" L x 2.375" W (7.9 cm x 6 cm)
