Description:

East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A lovely decorative wood panel, carved, painted, and in places given a gilded surface, from the interior of a Qing period building. It would have been part of a much larger mosaic made of similar panels, all containing scenes - like this one - of beauty and natural harmony. Here, flowers and vines burst forth from large, decorative planters, the scene given a deep red background color and set inside a raised, gilded border. The entire panel has been skillfully carved from a single piece of elm (yu mu, in Chinese) and it would have graced the walls of a well-to-do home or temple. Size: 13.55" W x 4.25" H (34.4 cm x 10.8 cm)
