Description:

Europe, likely Southern Europe, Baroque Period, ca. 17th century CE. A profoundly tender and intimate devotional sculpture from the Baroque period, this finely carved figure of the Christ Child is rendered in the round from wood, presented nude to emphasize both his humanity and divinity. Standing in quiet poise atop a faceted octagonal base—once richly painted in crimson and now mellowed to a deep umber—the infant savior is portrayed with remarkable naturalism: robust limbs, softly rounded cheeks, and a gently protruding belly evoke the lifelike physicality celebrated in 17th-century religious art. Size: 7.3" L x 11.3" W x 27.5" H (18.5 cm x 28.7 cm x 69.8 cm)

The Christ Child raises his right hand in a traditional gesture of blessing, while his left arm—terminating in a hollow socket—was likely intended to cradle a now-lost symbol of authority, such as an orb or cross. His parted lips and serene expression convey a sense of nascent speech and spiritual presence, while the hair, meticulously incised into elegant waves and coiled ringlets at the ears, frames the visage with grace and delicacy.
