Description:

Western Europe or North America, Spain or Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 17th to early 18th century CE. An excellent carbon-steel sword known as an "espada ancha" (literally "wide sword") with a hand-carved wooden handle. The straight, double-edged blade of the weapon is adorned with three vertical incised striations on each face that stretch across its base to the sword's triangular rain guard. Fixed with a black-painted wooden grip, the hilt features an iron crossguard that curves upwards on one side and down to where the pommel would be on the other side, forming a knuckle guard. A series of diagonal dashes decorate the grip creating a ridged surface that prevents one's hand from slipping. Size: 34.5" L x 4" W (87.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
