Description:

Central Europe, southern Germany or Austria, Baroque period, ca. late 17th to early 18th century CE. A group of four carved wooden relief plaques depicting pivotal episodes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary, each enclosed within a scalloped, flower-like border characteristic of southern German and Austrian Baroque devotional art. The scenes include the Immaculate Conception, showing the Virgin standing gracefully upon a crescent moon; the Finding in the Temple, or Christ among the Doctors, where the youthful Jesus sits at the center of learned elders as Mary and Joseph approach from the side; the Resurrection, depicting Christ rising triumphantly from the tomb amid startled soldiers; and the Ascension, with Christ borne aloft upon clouds above his disciples. Carved in high relief from softwood, the compositions display refined modeling and intricate detail, uniting narrative clarity with expressive vitality. Size (all about the same): 8.8" W x 9" H (22.4 cm x 22.9 cm)

Such plaques were likely part of a Rosary altar, private chapel, or devotional ensemble illustrating the Mysteries of the Rosary, intended to inspire meditation through sacred imagery.

Once polychromed and gilded, the wood now bears a luminous, time-softened patina that reveals both craftsmanship and centuries of reverent handling. The set exemplifies the Baroque synthesis of faith and ornament - where devotion became theatrical, and the divine found eloquence in the quiet language of carved wood.
