Lot 182A
Europe, Dutch School, 17th century. "The Finding of Moses" pen and ink with gray wash and incised line. A beautiful composition depicting the discovery of the infant Moses in the Nile River by the Pharoah's daughter and her attendants. Crowned and fancily dressed, the Pharoah's daughter occupies the center of the scene with two maidens holding the drapery of her gown above the river waters, standing beneath a parasol held by another attendant. The drama of Moses's rescue is captured as the infant in a reed basket is "fished" from the river waters. An emotionally impactful 17th century ink and wash drawing rendered with impressive artistry and technique, mounted under glass in a custom frame. Size (image): 6.5" L x 10.25" W (16.5 cm x 26 cm) Size (frame): 15.75" L x 18.875" W (40 cm x 47.9 cm)
In addition to "The Finding of Moses" this theme has been called "Moses in the Bullrushes" or "Moses Saved from the Waters" among other titles. The narrative comes from Chapter 2 of the Book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible. This theme was also depicted by Rembrandt as well as other old masters.
