After Jacques Laudin I (French, 1627-1695). "Caesar Caligula IIII" partially gilt painted enamel on copper, ca. 17th century. A lovely painted enamel on copper Limoges after the famed French enameller Jacques Laudin I featuring the profile bust of the Roman emperor Caligula with remains of "CAESAR CALIGULA IIII" inscribed in gold lettering around the periphery. The regal figure presents huge eyes, an aquiline nose, and a protruding chin, all crowned by a laurel wreath with a ribbon. Along with his son, Jacques Laudin executed several series of Limoges portrait medallions of the twelve Caesars after engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi. Size: 3" W x 3.9" H (7.6 cm x 9.9 cm)

  • Condition: Losses to paint and enamel, especially to peripheries and right side. Copper has perforation to bottom area and chipping with small losses to top periphery. Some bending and wrinkling to copper. Nice colors and detail on remaining enamel. Old collection label on verso.
