South Asia, India, Mughal period, ca. 17th century CE. A finely crafted Indian katar (push dagger) of the Mughal period, wrought entirely in iron and distinguished by its long, tapering blade and elegant hilt construction. The flat blade narrows to a reinforced tip, designed for armor-piercing thrusts, and is subtly decorated near the forte with a chiseled floral or gourd-like motif that provides both symbolic and aesthetic refinement. The hilt is formed with high, parallel side bars joined by two cross braces, creating a rigid grip that allowed the weapon to be held firmly in the fist and driven forward with exceptional force. This engineering gave the katar its unique advantage in close combat, where a single thrust could penetrate mail or quilted armor. The dagger's proportions, with its elongated blade and architectural grip, convey both martial functionality and ceremonial presence. Size: 17.5" L x 3.2" W (44.4 cm x 8.1 cm); 19.5" H (49.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Katars were not only battlefield weapons but also markers of rank and status, frequently worn by nobles and warriors across the Indian subcontinent. Some were elaborately decorated with gold, silver, or gemstones for courtly display, while iron examples such as this exemplify the austere yet refined craftsmanship associated with the Mughal era.
