Europe, Italian School, 17th century. A 17th century study of a Roman marble relief depicting a youthful Bacchus - god of wine, agriculture, and fertility famous for his festivals, known as the Bacchanalia, which were celebrated with wild revelry - accompanied by Silenus, Baccus' elderly tutor and companion, chief of the band of satyrs who accompanied Bacchus (Dionysus) and Faunus (Pan). The composition is rendered in black chalk heightened with white within double ink mounting lines. A very special 17th century Italian drawing mounted under glass in an attractive custom mat and frame.   • Condition: Mounted under glass in an attractive custom mat and frame. Artwork not examined outside frame but appears to be in overall good condition with vivid imagery. Royal Athena Galleries label on gallery paper on the verso notes "ex Cassiano dal Pozzo, Pope Clemente XI, Cardinal A. Albani, King George III, Townley Maxwell Collections". Frame shows with a few scuffs/nicks but is otherwise intact and excellent.
