Description:

Northern or Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical period, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A gorgeous, hand-carved wood pilaster capital of the Composite order which combines characteristics of the ancient Greek-era Ionic and the Corinthian columns. Typical of the Corinthian capital, the floral ornamentation of the Composite capital is styled after the acanthus leaf, which combines with the scroll or volute designs that characterize the Ionic style. Composite columns have been used as decorative pilasters since the Renaissance. The verso is flattened and undecorated signifying that this capital did not serve as a architectural support but instead as a decorative element. Size: 11.75" L x 7.25" W x 9.5" H (29.8 cm x 18.4 cm x 24.1 cm)
