Description:

North America, United States, ca. early 19th century CE. An officer's dress saber featuring a long steel blade, faintly etched with scrolling foliate motifs and decorative emblematic elements. One brass langet remains intact, bearing a shield adorned with a right-facing eagle. The opposite side of the ricasso has a rubbed maker's mark, a crowned head in profile, suggestive of the Weyersberg firm. German-made blades were commonly imported and utilized by early American sword makers during this period. The cross guard is crafted from brass and richly decorated with floral and oak leaf designs. The grip is clad in bone, terminating in a brass pommel shaped as an eagle's head with an open beak - a classic hallmark of early 19th-century American officer sabers. This type of sword would have served primarily as a ceremonial or dress piece, symbolizing rank and prestige rather than being intended for battlefield use. It likely dates to the Federal period, spanning from the War of 1812 through to the Mexican-American War (1840s). Size: 37" L x 5" W (94 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection, acquired via descent from grandfather, who collected from 1880 - 1910
