Description:

Great Britain, ca. 1911 CE; France, ca. 1830s to 1840s CE. A rare British military busby-style parade cap, dated 1911, and a French infantry shako from the short-lived Second French Republic. The busby is covered in black fur with a red wool felt top, lined in red silk with a leather headband. Inside is the maker's label for Hobson & Sons, Army Contractors, size "22 1/4" with the date "1911" and a "W D" (War Department) stamp confirming official issue. The French shako is cylindrical with a green-painted leather visor, black felted covering, and interior leather lining. Its silvered-tin plate features a Gallic cockerel over fasces and crossed standards above a Republique Francaise banner, surmounted by a tricolor cockade and red-white-blue pompom. Size of busby cap: 8" W x 6.5" H (20.3 cm x 16.5 cm); shako + visor: 11" W x 8" H (27.9 cm x 20.3 cm)

  • Condition: The fur cap has insect casings and should be frozen before displaying to ensure pests are eliminated. Active shedding to fur fibers and should be handled as little as possible. White stains to interior leather band. Patina and rubbing to silver wash on the metal areas. Fading and discoloration to rosette and pompom. Wear to both as expected with age and use, but overall great conditions!
