Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 1840s CE. An endearing and skillfully painted depiction of the birth of Jesus depicting the infant Christ child lying in a manger as the Virgin Mary gently swaddles him in white cloth and Saint Joseph gives praise to above. Three shepherds gaze upon the Holy Child in disbelief, 2 of which fall to their knees before him. The town of Bethlehem glows in the far left background with its famed star above, casting light onto the Baby Jesus. "Christmas of Christ" or "Nativity" is inscribed in Cyrillic above the scene. Note the artist's impressive use of detail in each gold of fabric and realistic visage that imbues the composition with both physical and emotional depth. Size: 11.8" W x 13.9" H (30 cm x 35.3 cm)
