Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Northern Europe, Great Britain, southwestern England, Devon, Braunton and Marwood, ca. December 12, 1849 CE. A fascinating and quite sizeable vellum document accounting the details of an indentureship between John Conibear, a yeoman or freeholder in Braunton, and John Williams, a cordwainer or shoemaker from Marwood, in black and red ink. The document describes the grant and demise of a house garden and parish premises in Marwood from John Conibear to John Williams for a term of 2,000 years. A royal stamp and seal can be seen to the left of the page, while a red wax seal is at the bottom. Note the zigzagged border along the top of the document - indenture documents were written in duplicate on the same sheet of vellum and separated by cutting along a jagged (or toothed, hence the term "indenture") line so that the 2 pieces could later be reunited to confirm authenticity, with each party of the agreement retaining a part. Size: 28.75" W x 23.75" H (73 cm x 60.3 cm)
