Description:

North America, United States, New York, ca. 1879 CE. A stunning Tiffany & Co christening mug made from sterling silver with a handle and low relief register around the exterior. The cup rests on a ring foot and "TIFFANY & CO 5470 MAKERS 660 STERLING SILVER" is stamped on the base. The scene on the body features merry children dressed in 19th century garb. The boys and girls are cheerfully marching while playing instruments, pushing wheelbarrows, and holding a banner and finial; one child is even wearing an oversized soldier's hat and wielding a sword! A wonderful piece that would have been presented as a gift during a christening ceremony. Size: 4" W x 3.25" H (10.2 cm x 8.3 cm); quality of silver 92.8% to 94.4%; total weight: 41.3 grams

Tiffany & Co. rose to prominence in the late 19th century, winning awards for metalworking that had previously only been awarded to Europeans. Newark, where they made their flatware from 1894 onward, was the American center for gold refining and the jewelry industry, providing easy access to gold and silver for Tiffany's designers. Some of these custom pieces were incredibly impressive. For example, one commissioned in the early 20th century by Elbert H. Gray, the founder of US Steel, was a full dinner service for eighteen, consisting of 566 total pieces and weighing 270 pounds, all in 18K gold! That service was so large that it had to be hidden after the Gold Reserve Act of 1934, which forbade the ownership of large quantities of gold, passed.
