Attributed to Pierre Paul Leon Glaize (French, 1842-1931). Oil on canvas, n.d. A beautiful large-scale 19th century painting of a woman in the woods signed "Leon Glaize" at the lower left. The composition presents a lovely woman dressed in elegant pink garments in the wilderness. She sits upon a rocky outcropping holding a white object, perhaps a letter that she reads, as a stream flows to the far left. All is rendered with expressive brushwork and a rich palette, the petal pink hues of her clothing in striking contrast to the soft shades of green and earthen hues of nature. A wonderful painting that reflects the lessons of two movements, Romanticism and Neoclassicism, of the earlier 19th century. On the one hand, a Romantic theme - a sole figure in the sublimity of nature. On the other, a composition that reflects the restraint of the Neoclassical style. Size (painting): 29.25" L x 36.75" W (74.3 cm x 93.3 cm) Size (frame): 35.4" L x 42.75" W (89.9 cm x 108.6 cm)

Pierre Paul Leon Glaize, usually referred to as Leon Glaize, was born into an artistic family. His father, Auguste-Barthelemy Glaize, was his first teacher, and when he was 21 years old, Leon enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied in the atelier of the esteemed artist and teacher Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904). Leon Glaize's artworks are held in the collections of important institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse, and the Rouen Opera House. Two of his works were presented at the Salon. "Une Conjuration aux Premiers Temps de Rome" (sadly destroyed in WWII) was in the Salon of 1875, and "Le Christ aux Limbes" was in the Salon of 1900.
