Description:

North America, United States, ca. 1890s CE. A striking spiked pith-style infantry officers helmet, perhaps from the era of the Spanish-American War, designed for dress uniforms and parades. The helmet is constructed from cork covered with wool felt, with black patent leather trim and an interior leather sweatband stamped "Military & Society Goods / The Pettibone MFG. Co. / Cincinnati O. USA." At the front is a brass National Coat of Arms plate, featuring an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a banner in its beak inscribed "E Pluribus Unum." Crossed rifle buttons with hooks on each side indicate infantry designation and likely once secured a chain chin strap. Gold aiguillette cords drape from the top, attached with escutcheon shields. Atop the helmet, a brass plume holder adorned with an oak leaf and acorn motif supports the dramatic horsehair plume, cascading like a fountain. Size: 10.5" L x 7" W x 12" H (26.7 cm x 17.8 cm x 30.5 cm)

The Pettibone Company was established after the American Civil War, approximately 1865 to 1871, and became a well-known uniform and regalia manufacturer from the late 19th to early 20th century CE.
