Description:

Europe, United Kingdom, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A well preserved example of an iron spontoon made for the private militias raised in England to support the King against Napoleonic invasion. It features a flared base, a short blade, and a socket that attaches to a long wooden pole. A black cloth tassel hangs from below the guard, probably placed there in the Victorian period when it would have been displayed in the manor house of the family that had financially supported the militia. Size: 1.9" W x 73" H (4.8 cm x 185.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in May 2012; ex-Fagan Arms, Clinton Township, Michigan, USA

  • Condition: Rich patina on blade; the blade's form is very well preserved. Pole may be a replacement but it has some wear commensurate with being quite old. The decorative tassel around its guard is probably Victorian.
