Description:

Northern Europe, England, ca. late 18th century to early 19th century CE. A handsome trade flintlock rifle that was perhaps used as a bartering item with Native American tribes. The wooden stock is carved from a single piece of hardwood and features a bulky back stock, a thick grip, and a lengthy steel barrel housing with brass fittings and a wooden ram rod in the groove beneath. The stock is hand engraved, perhaps by the owner of the gun, with a number that may indicate the year he acquired it: "ABRAHAM DAW 99." The steel lock plate is stamped with "WARRANTED" after the hammer, perhaps an inspector or makers' mark for London or Birmingham. A nice patina covers the entire rifle. Size: 61" L x 5" W (154.9 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection; ex-Jim Gordon collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
