Description:

Europe, ca. 18th to 19th centuries CE. A slightly curved piece of wood carved into a shallow frame, with an oil-painted scene of two angels. The agnels have kind faces, well painted, and stand with large wings; gold paint gives detail to their armor, Gabriel's feet, and, above all, their halos. Michael stands with his sword held up in one hand, while Gabriel holds a staff. There are some difficult-to-read Latin letters painted between their heads. Panel painting on wood was incredibly popular in Europe and elsewhere until the introduction of canvas in the 16th century, and it continued to be a common painting form, especially for religious subjects. Size: 6.9" W x 9.4" H (17.5 cm x 23.9 cm)
