Description:

Western/Central Europe, Germany, ca. late 18th to mid-19th century CE. A forged-iron cuirass back plate with two semicircular grooves which accommodates the arms and shoulders of the wearer. The gently convex profile has a wavy, T-shaped groove that culminates in a slight vertical ridge along the spine. The peripheries of the neckline, arm slots, and back flange are reinforced with narrow coiled strips. Back plates like this example were attached to the frontal chest plate via leather straps or iron hinges to provide the soldier with protection from all angles.
