Description:

South Asia, India, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A solid brass figure depicting Krishna the "Butter Thief" as a youth holding a ball of butter that he stole from his stepmother. The youthful Krishna or Bala Krishna is nude from the waist down, with hips swaying as he lifts his legs and arms in dance, all upon a lotus pedestal and square base. According to scriptures, as mischievous children/babies, Krishna and his older brother Balarama stole jars of butter and yogurt from their families and neighbors. Cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, this beautiful brass figure presents a dynamic pose and wonderful detailed delineation of his coiffure, jewelry, and facial features! Size: 2.2" L x 3.75" W x 5.75" H (5.6 cm x 9.5 cm x 14.6 cm)
