South Asia, India, ca. 18th century CE. A serene brass figure of a Jain Tirthankara, finely cast and embodying the ideals of meditative stillness and spiritual detachment. The enlightened being is shown seated in padmasana (lotus position) upon a tiered plinth, the hands folded in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. His torso is erect, the chest subtly modeled, and the broad shoulders emphasize an idealized symmetry. The figure's face, with downcast almond-shaped eyes, projects tranquility, while elongated earlobes and a tightly coiled coiffure reference ascetic renunciation and spiritual wisdom. The square base is decorated with incised lotus petal motifs and simple linear borders, anchoring the figure with a sense of ritual presence. Such brass icons were central to private and temple devotion in the Jain tradition, where images of the Tirthankaras (spiritual teachers who achieved liberation) served as aids for meditation and reminders of the path toward moksha (release from rebirth). Size: 2.6" L x 3.3" W x 4.1" H (6.6 cm x 8.4 cm x 10.4 cm)
The restrained simplicity of this work, without overt ornamentation, reflects the Jain emphasis on purity, detachment, and spiritual clarity. This piece exemplifies the 18th century Indian brass-casting tradition, where compact, portable icons allowed worshippers to establish sacred space within both temple and domestic settings.
