Description:

Spanish Colonial period, Mexico or Spain, a. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A fine sword with a gently curved, single-edged blade with a thick spine, a shallow fuller running down roughly three-quarters of the length, and a human-faced moon as well as a fish engraved on both sides. One side of the blade is engraved with "Soy D Gregorio," and the other side bears the name "Olibares." The stocky iron quillons are adorned with gilt crosshatch motifs and foliate motifs within ovoid frames. Three ovoid gilt-iron appliques are inlaid along the hand-carved bull horn handle that depicts an intimidating avian creature with nacre eyes, and a thin chain between the pommel and quillons acts as a lightweight hand guard.
