Description:

Central Europe, Austria, Rococo Period, ca. 18th century CE. Circle of Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder (Austrian, 1720 to 1795). Paint and gesso on wood. A dramatic, hand-carved wooden sculpture by the Circle of Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder, an Austrian Rococo sculptor. The piece depicts a man covering Jesus in a robe painted in lustrous pigments, such as royal blue, burgundy, and apricot. An emaciated Jesus stands in contrapposto, his solemn visage gazing downward as his companion covers his skeletal shoulders and back with the robe. The man leans to his left, looking in the same direction of the deity, his drapery rippling with vital energy. Note how the piece showcases the characteristic features of Schwanthaler's style, such as the elongated figural proportions, sharp-edged drapery folds, and the beautifully expressive, anatomically detailed hands. Size: 7.1" W x 14" H (18 cm x 35.6 cm)

Johann Peter Schwanthaler was part of a distinguished family of sculptors that produced works for religious and domestic settings throughout Bavaria, Austria, and southern Germany for more than 250 years.
