Central Europe, Austria, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A carved wooden statue of Saint Florian, standing upon a pedestal, with a burning building at his feet and a piggin bucket (single-handle pail/ladle) in his hand to quench the flames, and a banner in his left hand. He is dressed in cuirass armor, helmet, and a flowing robe. The back is flat, with a small metal loop on the verso, likely for securing the figure into a public niche or shrine. The figure is carved separately from the base and attached by a wooden tenon. St. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters, invoked against fires and lightning. He is believed to have been a Roman officer born in what is now Austria and a Christian martyr during the 3rd century CE. Reportedly he saved a town from a fire by extinguishing the flames with a single bucket of water - as seen here - leading to his later veneration as a protector against fire. He was executed for his faith after refusing to renounce Christianity and help persecute fellow Christians. Size: 6.5" L x 3.25" W x 14.5" H (16.5 cm x 8.3 cm x 36.8 cm)
Provenance: private Carson City, Nevada, USA collection, acquired via descent and originally acquired in Vienna, Austria in the 1970s
