South America, Brazil, ca. 18th century CE. A finely carved and painted wooden figurine depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, also known as Anthony of Lisbon as he was a Portuguese devout Catholic follower of Saint Francis of Assissi and would spend his final days in Padua, Italy. Saint Anthony is depicted holding the holy book in his left hand and a T-shaped cross/staff (usually associated with Anthony the Great) in his right, wearing a gold trimmed black Franciscan habit with hood resting behind his head nd red-brown robes beneath. He projects a solemn countenance and facial expression and stands upon an integral square red base. Saint Anthony became an articulate speaker known for his passionate preaching and expert knowledge of scripture who converted hundreds of people and spread Portuguese evangelism. He also became the patron saint of recovering lost items and miraculously finding lost people. A lovely antique statue honoring the patron saint. Size: 10" x 3" x 3" (25.4 x 7.6 x 7.6 cm)
