Description:

Northern Europe, England, Georgian Era, ca. 18th century CE. A stout and stately example of Georgian-era hunting craftsmanship, this 18th century English hunting sword bears the hallmarks of both function and flair. Forged in carbon steel, the blade is straight and single-edged with a robust spine and gently rounded tip, designed for dispatching game in the field. Along the ricasso, a maker's stamp appears in the form of a crescent moon and two six-pointed stars - an evocative motif likely referencing nocturnal pursuits or simply a maker's mark brimming with symbolism. The hilt is a study in refined ornament. Carved from wood with deep vertical fluting, the grip sits within a cast brass frame richly decorated in relief. The knuckle guard flows into a stylized guard featuring animal motifs - likely hounds or stags - emblematic of the hunt. Most striking of all is the scene on the pommel: a dynamic figural group depicting a man with two dogs attacking a wild boar. Size: 29.3" L x 3.2" W (74.4 cm x 8.1 cm)

This vivid tableau, rendered in miniature with sculptural detail, encapsulates the sword's intended use and narrative purpose. Additional decorative flourishes, including possible human or mythological figures along the quillons, reinforce the piece's ceremonial and symbolic character. Likely carried by a gentleman of means, this sword would have served not only as a practical hunting implement but also as a marker of social identity - a badge of rural aristocracy and a work of art in its own right.
