Northwestern Europe, England, ca. 18th century CE. A matched pair of George III sterling silver sugar baskets with glass inserts, made by the silversmith William Abdy. The vessels boast an ovoid pedestal foot and a boat-shaped basket. The underside of each is stamped with the maker mark "WA," as well as the purity, city, duty, and the year marks. The exterior of the basket is engraved with a monogram on one side. Both have cobalt glass inserts that are removable. Size: 4" L x 2.25" W x 2.375" H (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm x 6 cm); silver quality: 92% to 95%; weight: 143.5 grams

  • Condition: Heavy oxidation and green patina around rim of one. Indentations, abrasions, surface wear, and scratches to both. Dark toning on both. Marks are legible and sharp. The glass inserts are intact and removable with only minor nicks around rims. Monogram is soft and indiscernible.
