Description:

Europe, ca. early 18th century CE. A beautiful hand-colored engraving on hand-made paper for a title page, "Impatientia et Negligentia" / "Patientia et Industria." The Latin translates to "Impatience and Negligence / Patience and Industry" implies a moralistic theme. The artist of this work clearly had an appreciation for anatomy; note the refined proportions of the gods' and cherubs' bodies as well as the sense that we are viewing bodies in motion. In addition, the artist had a taste for classical architecture and excelled at linear perspective. Renderings of neoclassical architecture by masters such as Giovanni Battista Piranesi were quite popular among educated Europeans throughout the 18th century. On Rx is written "c. 1720 and $2000." A superb early 18th century engraving, expertly done with an exceptional composition, skillful hand, and lovely color. Size: image measures 9" W x 14.5" H (22.9 cm x 36.8 cm) on larger paper
