Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. This is an elegant and high quality 83.4% to 84.5% (equivalent to 20K+) gold armorial seal with a pierced ring for suspension from a watch fob. The base of the handle that meets the stamp verso is decorated with radiating rosette petals, and the handle itself is an ornate scrolling openwork that is surmounted by a pierced ring for suspension. The circular seal face is cast with a family crest featuring a shield with a bend sinister (diagonal band through the center) and a crown above, all framed by a flowing banner and garlands. Fob seals were worn on watch fobs as accessories for gentlemen - they were often purely decorative, but the more personalized, such as this example with a crest, were used to sign documents. Size: 0.61" Diameter x 0.8" H (1.5 cm x 2 cm)
