Description:

Europe, France, ca. 1700 to 1850 CE. This is an oak wood panel carved with a depiction of an androgynous faun, satyr, or possibly the god Pan; the figure has clear male and female features as well as having a half human, half goat body. The carving is fantastical, with swirling, curved designs, but not abstract -- from the facial features to the hairy goat legs, it has a naturalistic element. The figure of Pan -- Greek god associated with nature and untamed sexuality -- was revived as an artistic symbol in post-Renaissance Europe; many artistic depictions of him come from the 18th and 19th centuries. Size: 1.5" L x 8.25" W x 21.25" H (3.8 cm x 21 cm x 54 cm).
